第36回 イディオム - 指、手、足

今回も前回に続けて、身体を使った表現を見ていきましょう。今回は、指と手、そして足に関するイディオムです。
 
「to give the thumbs up」（または「thumbs down」）とは、何かに対して、承認や賛成（または反対）することを意味します。
My boss gave the thumbs up to my new project.
私の新規プロジェクトを上司が承認してくれた。
 
「to keep your fingers crossed」とは、幸運や成功を祈ることを意味します（注：何かを祈るときには、多くの人が実際に指を交差させます）。
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it won’t rain for our picnic tomorrow.
明日のピクニックは雨が降らないように祈っているわ。
 
「to put your finger on something」とは、何かの原因を突き止めることを意味します。
John put his finger on why the car wouldn’t start. We’d run out of petrol.
なぜ車のエンジンがかからないのか、ジョンがその原因を突き止めた。ガス欠だったんだよ。
 
「to give someone a hand」とは、手助けをするという意味です。
Give me a hand with this box please. It’s really heavy.
この箱を運ぶのを手伝ってちょうだい。本当に重くて。
 
「To have first-hand knowledge (or experience)」とは、直接肌で感じる（または経験をする）ことです。
Let’s ask Lucy about where to visit in Tokyo. She has first-hand knowledge as she used to live there.
東京でどこへ行ったらいいか、ルーシーに聞いてみようよ。実際に東京に住んでたから、あちこちよく知っているよ。
 
「to have your hands full」とは、手がいっぱいで、とても忙しいという意味です。
I have my hands full at work now that Brenda is sick. I doing two jobs!
ブレンダが病気なものだから、仕事がとても忙しくて。２人分の仕事をしてるのよ！
 
何かが「changes hands」というのは、持ち主が変わることです。
We wanted to visit the Indian restaurant but it had changed hands and is now a steak house.
あのインド料理店に行きたかったが、持ち主が変わっていて、今はステーキ屋になっている。
 
「second-hand」の品物とは、それが新品でないことを意味します。
Second-hand clothes shops are becoming really popular.
古着屋が人気を呼んでいる。
 
 
「second-hand」はまた、直接的でないことも意味します。
We don’t have a TV so all ours news is second-hand.
テレビがないので、私たちの情報はすべてまた聞きです。
 
「to stand on your own two feet」とは自立することを意味します。
When Jerry left university he had to learn to stand on his own two feet.
大学を卒業したとき、ジェリーは自立する方法を学ぶ必要があった。
 
もし、あなたが「put your foot in it」だとしたら、それはうっかりして何かへまをしてしまうことです。
I really put my foot in it when I told Harry I hated wigs! I didn’t know he wore one!
ハリーに、かつらは大嫌いだなんて言ってしまって、ほんとうにまずかったよ。ハリーがかつらをつけてるなんて、知らなかったんだ！
 
「to put your foot down」とは、毅然とした態度をとることを意味します。
My father put his foot down when I said I wanted a tattoo. (The father said no.)
タトゥーを入れたいと言ったら、父は断固たる態度に出た。（父は駄目だと言った）
 
もし、あなたが「get cold feet」だと言えば、急に何かが怖くなることを言います。
I got cold feet when the teacher asked me to explain the problem to the whole class.
先生に、クラス全員に問題について説明するようにって言われたときには、おじけづいたよ。
 
もし、あなたが「itchy feet」の持ち主なら、旅行をしたいという望みを抱いていることを意味します。
Tom has itchy feet, he’s always going somewhere new.
トムは旅行好きで、いつもどこか知らないところへ出かけている。
 
「to follow in someone’s footsteps」とは、誰かと同じ道を歩むことを意味します。
He followed in his father’s footsteps and became a lawyer.
彼は父親と同じ道を歩んで、弁護士になった。
 
さあ、こうしたイディオムを覚えて、相手からゴーサインをもらいましょう。怖がってはいけません。
