第29回 関係代名詞

英語の特徴として、代名詞が多用されること、またその種類の多いことがあります。日本人の書いた英語を読むと、単語や句が何度も繰り返えされていて、簡単な代名詞を1つか2つ使えばもっと簡単かつ明解な文になるのにと思うことがよくあります。
 
今日は関係代名詞について考えてみましょう。関係代名詞は人やモノなどそれまで話題に出た何かをもう一度指す場合に使用されます。関係代名詞は名詞や名詞句に取って代わるものです。関係代名詞には、that、where、which、who、whom、whose があります。取って代わられる名詞や名詞句は「先行詞」と呼ばれます。
 
もちろんこれらの語は他の種類の代名詞としても使用できます。
 
関係代名詞をどのように、なぜ、いつ使うべきかという規則は少々複雑なので、いくつかの例を見て感覚的につかむようにしましょう。
 
(1) Here is a picture of a house. The picture was drawn by Mary.
（これは家の絵です。その絵はメアリーが描きました）
 
(2) Here is a picture of a house that was drawn by Mary.
（これはメアリーが描いた家の絵です）
 
上記では関係代名詞の「that」が名詞句の「the picture」に置き換わっています。その結果、「picture」を繰り返えさなくてすみ、文が簡潔になっています。(1) で2文になっている唯一の理由はメアリーがその絵を描いたことを強調するためでしょう。
 
場合によっては「that」の代わりに「which」が使われることに注意してください。
 
(3) Here is a picture of a house which was drawn by Mary.
（これはメアリーが描いた家の絵です）
 
(2) と (3) はほぼ同じ意味ですが、(3) は「家の絵」ではなく「メアリーが描いた」ことがやや強調されているように感じられます。一般的な法則として、これらの場合は「that」を使います。
 
次の例を見てみましょう。
 
(4) London, which was established by the Romans, grew to be the greatest city in the world.
（先行詞：London）
（ローマ人によって築かれたロンドンは世界最大の都市に発展しました）
 
ここで「which」は埋め込み節の一部、すなわち文の途中にある追加情報を含む節になっています。この例ではwhichを「that」に置き換えることはできません。
 
また「which」を使用すると文末に節を追加することもできます。
 
(5) Didsbury is a suburb of Manchester, which is 200 miles from London.
（先行詞：Manchester）
（ディズベリーはロンドンから200マイルのところにあるマンチェスターの郊外です）
 
ここでも「which」を「that」に置き換えることはできません。
 
「Who」は人間を表す語を置き換えるのに使用されます。
 
(6) There is the man who stole my wallet!
（先行詞：the man）
（私の財布を盗んだ男がいる！）
 
(7) It was David Beckham who scored the winning goal.
（先行詞：David Beckham）
（決勝点をあげたのはデービッド・ベッカムだった）
 
「Whom」は間接目的語に使われます。
 
(8) The teacher asked to whom had John written the note.
（先行詞：メモの意図した受け取り手）
（先生はジョンが誰にメモを書いたのか尋ねました）
 
(9) Dr David Livingstone was the explorer to whom H. M. Stanley uttered the immortal words “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?”
（先行詞：Dr David Livingstone）
（デイヴィッド・リヴィングストン博士は、H. M.スタンリーがあの不朽の名言「リヴィングストン博士でいらっしゃいますか」と言って呼びかけた探検家でした）
 
「Whose」は所有者に使用されます。
 
(10) Whose pen is this?
（先行詞：ペンの所有者）
（これは誰のペンですか）
 
(11) John, whose friend is a professional actor, gave me some great tips on acting.
（先行詞：John）
（友人にプロの俳優がいるジョンが演技について有益な助言をしてくれました）
 
(8) と (10) には不定関係代名詞が含まれていることに注意してください。これらの代名詞はまだ言及されていない誰か（または何か）を指しています。
 
次は「which」の追加的な使い方についてです。
 
(12) The Globe Theatre, in which many of Shakespeare’s plays were first performed, burnt down in 1613.
（先行詞：the Globe Theatre）
（グローブ座は多くのシェークスピア劇が最初に上演されたところですが、1613年に焼失しました。）
 
(13) In the Society of Engineers, of which I am a member, James Watt is our greatest hero.
（先行詞： the Society of  Engineers）

「Where」も関係代名詞として使用することができます。
 
(14) Burnley, the town where I was born, now has a Premier League football team.
（先行詞：Burnley）
（私のふるさとのバーンリーには今日プレミアリーグのサッカーチームがあります）
