第163回 イディオム 13

前回イディオムについて書いてからもうだいぶ経ちますね。それでは嬉しい気持ちと悲しい気持ちに関するイディオムを見ていきましょう。

【 とても嬉しい 】
“I’m thrilled to bits, my boss just gave me a big raise. Now we will be able to buy a new house!”
「すごく嬉しい！上司が給料を大幅にアップしてくれたんだ。これで新しい家を買うことができるよ！」

“I feel on top of the world, Sheila said she would marry me. I’d asked her so many times.”
「天にも昇る気持ちだよ！シーラが結婚してくれるって。何度もお願いしていたんだ。」

“I’m on cloud nine, my team just won the cup. Now we will be playing in Europe in the Cup Winners Cup!”
「この上なく幸せ！チームが優勝したんだ。これでヨーロッパのカップウィナーズカップに出場できるんだ！」

“I’m over the moon; I finally passed my driving test. That was my twelve try.”
「嬉しくてたまらない！ついに運転免許試験に合格したよ。12回目の挑戦だったんだ。」

“I’m in seventh heaven, I just won the lottery. The family will be over the moon!”
「最高の気分だよ！宝くじに当たったんだ。家族も大喜びだろうな！」
 

【 嬉しい 】
“I get a real kick driving over the speed limit in the middle of the night when no one is around.”
[Very much enjoy doing something. Informal.]
「周りに誰もいない時、夜中に制限速度を超えて運転するのは本当にワクワクするよ。」
［何かをすることが楽しくて仕方ない。口語的］

“Rika is keen to go bungee-jumping – just for kicks.”
[Do something because it is exciting, or even dangerous. Informal.]
「リカはバンジージャンプに行きたがっている―スリルを求めて」
［刺激的または危険だからこそ何かをすること。口語的］

“Yoko jumped for joy when she heard she had passed the test.”
[Be very happy and excited about something that has happened.]
「ようこはテストに受かったと聞いて大喜びした。」
［起こった出来事がとても嬉しくて興奮すること。］

“I’ve been walking on air ever since I heard I had been accepted by Tokyo University.”
(Also floating on air.)
[Be very happy about something good that has happened.]
「私は東京大学に合格したことを聞いてから、うきうきしている。」
​（walking on air は floating on airとも言う）
［何か良いことがあってすごく嬉しいこと。］

“It’s great to hear from you. It really made my day.”
[Something makes you very happy.]
「連絡ありがとう。とても嬉しい。」
［何かによってとても幸せな気持ちになること。］

【 悲しい 】
Dear Louise,
Hope all goes well with you. Unfortunately, everyone here is out of sorts![1] Will is down in the dumps[2] because he doesn’t like his teacher this year. I’ve told him that it’s not the end of world[3] and that he’d better just grin and bear it[4], but I think he likes being a misery guts[5] and so he complains about her every night. Pat is also suffering from sour grapes[6] because I got the role in the school play that she wanted. This puts a damper on[7] every meal, so I’m really looking forward to staying with you at the weekend.

[7] Stop an occasion from being enjoyable (sometimes dampener is used instead of damper).
    楽しい状況に水を差すこと（damperの代わりにdampenerを使うこともある）
