第20回：論文のDiscussion (4)
こんにちは。David McQuireです。引き続きDiscussionのセクションを取り上げます。今回は、Discussionに研究のlimitations (限界) を書くときのヒントです。
Discussionでは自分の研究のlimitationsを評価することが必須ですが、これを忘れている論文を多くみかけます。ジャーナルによっては、limitationsを小見出しにして詳細なコメントを求めているものもありますので注意してください。一般的には、次の質問に回答する形で2~3の文章にまとめればOKです。
1) 試験の例数は研究の目的に見合った統計学的検出力を備えているか。
2) 比較していない交絡因子があった可能性。その因子に有意な群間差はなかったか。
3) 追跡期間は適切だったか。
4) データの収集・解析のために最善の方法を選択したか。
それでは例を挙げてみます。
The limitations of this study include its open label design, the significant difference in the percentage of smokers between two groups, and the short follow-up period of 12 weeks that did not allow adequate assessment of the effect of treatment on cardiovascular events.
いかがですか。この後に、そのlimitationsを解決するためのコメントを追加すればさらによくなります。
Accordingly, a long-term double-blind trial needs to be performed using well-matched groups of patients to confirm our findings.
limitationsについて触れるのは、ジャーナルから特に指摘されない限り簡単な記述でOKです。上の質問例に対して回答するような形で書き進めると簡単でしょう。
